The assignment we did was to order the items on the list given to us in decreasing importance to a group of people stranded in the pacific ocean on a life raft. We did it individually and as a group and then looked up what the Coast Guard thinks is most important in that situation. If I ever were to be on a life raft with a group of 3-5 people my age with similar skills as myself, the 2 most important things on the list would be a 25 liter container of water, a case of army rations. Those seemed to be obvious to me because food and water are 2 essentials that would be tough to obtain on a life raft. My last choice was shark repellant because I feel it wouldn't help that much because what are the chances of running into a shark and the point isn't to try to live long on a life raft, it is just to live long enough that you have a good chance of someone rescuing you. I had trouble ranking the sextant and rum because they can both be helpful or useless depending on who you are with. My group and I felt the same way on most things, however, on the rum and the shaving mirror, we differed on importance. I thought the rum would be helpful as something to do as well and aa something to help clean out wounds but the group didn't think it was as impoortant as I did obviously. i didn't think the shaving mirror was that important because it would be hard to signal someone anyways and they would be able to see you anyways whereas my group as well as the Coast Guard thought it was very important. My group just used logic and debated on what was more important to decide. I used experiential data to base the importance of items on the list and even after seeing the Coast Guard's opinionbelieve that with my skill set, the list I made of importance would give me a better chance of surviving than theirs would. The Coast Guard's list put more emphasis on getting rescued quickly whereas I believe that typically the longer you survive, the better chance you have of being rescued.
